It’s interesting looking for a job at age 33, in a new country and in a new field of work yet I feel more confident and more sure of the job I can do than I ever have in the past when interviewing for something I thought I was qualified for. Life experience, as I’ve found, consciously, over the past 10 years, is still the best institution for education. Typical institutions just add to life experience. But we learn from life itself, constantly even when we’re not trying.  Jobs included.  There are challenges and healthy competitions and maybe even the occasional let-down all without trying. We get it done- whatever it is that life calls for. May it be a break from what you know.  Say retiring or quitting a job and taking a trip. Or the beginning of a life experience like a new job or a new hobby or a new hair-do.

The process of looking for a job in London has taught me to better navigate the city, not be so nervous I’m going to miss my stop on the train or bus and not be so nervous about being late as here you can blame it on the train or traffic! I have learned I like London Bridge station allot. It’s old and made of brick. It’s got a windy corridor with really cute little shops that you can buy things from or just admire as you pass by, if you’re not being pushed by the fast pace of the crowd. I have learned to hold my own when the tube gets jammed packed with people trying to either get home or get to work. What’s the rush? Oh- yeah. I want to get to work on time and get home at a reasonable hour too.  I have learned to enjoy the down time I have now on the train  and use it for feeding my brain with nonsense from all the daily papers scattered about the trains or with a book of my choice.  I’m reading about Richard Branson, the Virgin mega-billionaire and successful a entraprenuer. Very interesting story. I highly recommend. I have learned I do want to be a recruiter and that I don’t have to take the first job offer that comes my way. I have also learned how to interview better by interviewing. We wonder why we’re so tired at the end of a day even if it is a day full great opportunities, fun and success. We are constantly taking information in, processing it and using it to the best of our abilities, all day-everyday, learning, accepting, texting, choosing, negotiating, smiling, walking, typing, reading, answering, watching, enjoying, feeling, eating, driving, calling,  dialing, and then some. Even the smallest detail, “What should I have for lunch?”  can turn into where should I go for lunch? How much time do I have for lunch? Am I going to have what my heart desires or what the doctor orders?

That is what has been going on with me. Nothing more (could there be more?!) nothing less. Just a simple, crazy day in the life of a newly, transplanted Londoner. I’m happy to live outside the city. My solace each day is to finally arrive at Hackbridge Station just across Beddington Park. I ride, in the dark, through the grassy playing field, crossing over the stream where I can hear the ducks swimming about,  to arrive home and continue to negotiate and decision-make my way through dinner and what movie to watch and the what time to go to bed. Thank god Kim is here. He’s able to help me feel that the only thing that matters is the present moment.

Big Bowl of Blackberries, originally uploaded by The Magins.

When was the last time you got the chance to see where those beautiful berries you have the opportunity to eat almost year round these days come from? I haven’t picked berries since I was kid living in upstate NY. They don’t exactly grow wild in LA!

Kim and I picked some beautiful blackberries yesterday at Beddington Park. We took the bikes to the park to have a picnic and catch some rays. While sitting there next to the stream, we noticed the bushes next to our picnic area were covered in blackberries. Kim had no problem finishing the last cookies we had in a zip lock bag for us to use to put our scrumptious berries in. We couldn’t believe they filled a whole bowl once we rinsed them at home!

Today, I’ll make a berry something. Do you have any suggestions, recipes for berries?
